Farima Berenji is an Iranian-American scholar and an award winning, internationally acclaimed performing artist, instructor, dance ethnologist, and archaeologist. Farima holds a B.S. in Health Science with a Minor in Art History and Performing Arts, as well as an M.A. in Anthropology and Archeology with special emphasis in Persianate Studies and Persian Mythology. Following her education, Farima completed her residency with the United Nations and wrote her archaeological thesis Cross-Cultural Education: A Dialogue among Cultures and her anthropological dance research Poetry in Motion then continued her research work on excavations of Near Eastern archeology, concentrating on preservation of ancient and mystical and warrior dances. She has appeared in scholarly documentaries hosted by National Geographic and the U.N., and has been highlighted in various international media.

Farima is a third generation artist—her devotion to the world of arts inspired by both her mother and grandmother as performing artists, poets, and musicians. Her spiritual and dance training spans years of intensive research with master artists, scholars, and spiritual teachers worldwide. She has been privileged to study with great masters such as the San Jose Ballet, Nancy Rose (Dirctor of Kafkaz Dance Company of Turkey), Dr. Anthony Shay (Director of Avaz Dance Company), Robert De Warren (Director of National Ballet of Iran), Dr. Lloyd Miller (Director of Eastern Ballet), Dr. Johanna Movassat (Professor of Middle Eastern Studies), Dr. Jorge Miller (Professor of Archeology), Sufi master and dervish Dr. Rahmi Oruç Güvenç of Turkey, and her mother who was her first dance teacher and mentor.

Farima has lectured, facilitated research projects, collaborated, and choreographed for highly acclaimed internationally renowned companies such as DanceVersity, Bay Area Dance Watch, Payvand Dance Company, Avaz Dance Company, Djanbazian Dance Company, Mystic Rose Dance Company, Rosanna Gamson World Wide, ODC, Tumata Organization of Turkey, UNESCO, the Egyptian Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Iranian National Museum and Conservatory, World Dance Fusion of San Francisco, “30 Voices” Women’s Rights Organization, and many other companies, musicians, and artists based in U.S., Iran, Kurdistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkey.

Farima is the founder and artistic director of the Farima Dance Company and the Simorgh Dance Collective world wide. She is also soloist and researcher for the Tumata Music Organization of Turkey, a member of the Iranian Woman’s Right Organization “30 Voices”, member of Bay Area Dance Watch, and a past member of the United Nations Association and UNESCO.

Farima is the founder and director of Dance, a Dialogue among Cultures, promoting dance education worldwide to create unity among all nations. Farima is founder and director of the Poetry in Motion, Lioness, and Awakening projects. Based upon her dance anthropology research, the Poetry in Motion project is an improvisational dance method based on expression, feeling, and ecstatic movement to Persian classical poetry combining sacred, classical, and folk teachings of Persia and Central Asia. The Lioness project originated from her intensive archaeological excavation that revealed legendary ancient heroines, priestesses. Her project seeks to re-create and teach movement theory and styles of ancient warrioresses and amazons of Persia, Mesopotamia, and the Near East. Finally, the Awakening project is based upon her dance anthropological and mythological research of ancient sacred ritual dances of Persia and animal movement and feeling. The Awakening training program serves as a gateway for self-growth and spiritual transformation through movement, dance therapy, stillness, visualization, ancient and Persian Shamanic rituals, and the invocation of ancient Persian, Mesopotamian, and Near Eastern sacred animals and Goddesses.

Farima is the recipient of the prestigious UN/UNA award for her research, globally advocating dance education to underserved communities, inspiring positive personal and social change, as well as advocating dance history and dance archeological preservation. She has been recognized by Congressman Mike Honda, Tumata (Music and Cultural Organization of Turkey), Bay Area Dance Watch, San Jose City College, San Jose State University, and Cal State Hayward. United in all her accomplishments is her contribution in advocating art, culture, and dance to help bridge cultural gaps and create respect among all people.

Farima has also been recognized by the Iranian Woman’s Arts Committee “30 Voices” as the top 10 Iranian Woman in Arts and recognized as one of a few world experts and scholars of ancient and mystical dance ethnology.

Farima is an exceptionally inspiring instructor strongly connected to spirituality and healing. As a Sufi and semazen, Farima infuses spirituality into her dance and teachings to impassion, empower, and inspire her students to deeply understand the meaning of culture and dance and to explore dance as a powerful means of expressing emotion, spiritual healing, and to use dance as a dialogue among cultures. She seeks to lead people to the historic beauty and richness of Persia and the Silk Road culture and to aid them find inner bliss through dance, music, and spirituality.
