istanbul’da pek çok alışveriş merkezindeki tasarım, ışık, renk ve tüketim görüntüsünden etkilenen bahar, bu alanları fotoğraf yoluyla tekrar inşa ediyor ve bu görüntüleri günlük nesnelerin yanında yansıtarak mimarideki hiyerarşiyi çözümlüyor. bu tüketim merkezlerinde sunulan idealler hakkında endişe duyan sanatçı, türkiye’deki aşırı tüketim kültürünün, tüketim mimarisinin görsel dili kullanılarak ulaşılması imkansız ve gerçekte var olmayan küresel bir ütopyaya dönüştüğünü gözlemliyor. bu arzulanan ve gerek duyulan iki dünyayı kaynaştırmak için, bahar bize istanbul’da topladığı ve kullandığı nesneleri gösteriyor.

boş su şişeleri ve kırık şemsiyeler, kentsel toplu tüketim kültürünün gerçek yüzünü yansıtıyor. tüketim alanları aracılığıyla reklamı yapılan küresel kapitalist idealleri, sürekli çöpe atılan günlük nesnelerin yanına koyan sanatçı, tüketim toplumundaki uçuruma ve onun güncel kültürel ve politik alanlara olan ilgisine dikkat çekiyor. mekan algısı ve navigasyonuna ilgi duyan sanatçı, fotoğraf, video ve enstalasyonu kullanarak galeriyi, izleyicinin toplumda neye değer verildiğini sorgulayacağı bir alana çeviriyor.

washington dc doğumlu bahar yürükoğlu, the school of visual arts in new york city’de fotoğraf alanında lisans eğitimini ve boston’da massachusetts college of art & design’da interaktif medya alanında yüksek lisans eğitimini tamamladı. sanatçı, kişisel sergilerini en son olarak nesrin esirtgen koleksiyonu’nda, the hallway gallery’de, 301 gallery’de ve montserrat college of art’ta açtı. ayrıca yurtdışında çeşitli galerilerin iki-kişilik ve grup sergilerinde yer aldı. bahar, izlanda ve wyoming’da sanatçı konuk programlarına katıldı, ve 2015 yılında, kuzey kutbu konuk sanatçı programında yer alacak.

this place

attracted to the spectacle of design, light, color and consumption that persists within the numerous shopping centers around istanbul, bahar deconstructs these spaces through photography and then dissolves the hierarchy of the architecture by projecting the images along side everyday objects. concerned with the ideals being negotiated in these places of commerce, she views the hyper consumer culture of turkey as being highly mobilized towards an unattainable and nonexistent globalized utopia through a visual language of consumer architecture. bahar shows us the objects she has collected and used during her time in istanbul to merge these worlds of aspiration and necessity.

items such as empty water bottles and broken umbrellas represent a more honest version of the mass consumer culture being lived within the urban landscape. by juxtaposing the globalized capitalist ideals being marketed through these places of commerce with the everyday items repeatedly used discarded, the artist draws attention to the rift that exists in a society of mass consumption as it relates to the current cultural and political landscape. interested in perception and the navigation of space, she uses new work of photography, video and installation to transform the gallery into a place which invites the viewer to question the where value is placed in a society.

bahar yürükoğlu was born in washington dc. she graduated with a bfa in photography from the school of visual arts in new york city, and her mfa in interrelated media from massachusetts college of art & design, boston. her most recent solo exhibitions took place in nesrin esirtgen collection, the hallway gallery, 301 gallery, and montserrat college of art. she has also shown in two-person and group shows internationally. bahar attended two artist residencies in iceland and wyoming, and in 2015 she will attend the arctic circle residency.
