Mykki Blanco is the stage name of poet, performance artist, and rapper Michael David Quattlebaum Jr. The Blanco pseudonym and persona were developed, in part, from experiments with cross-dressing that fueled sexual empowerment, gender fluidity, and artistic declaration. Though expressed primarily through contemporary hip-hop, the artist creates, bends, and playfully challenges notions of identity through various creative projects. In 2011, he published his first book of poems “From the Silence of Duchamp to the Noise of Boys.” He also began performing in two musical projects; crushing industrial rock under the name No Fear, and glamorous, ghetto-fabulous riot grrrl rap under the name Mykki Blanco. Blanco’s work received critical acclaim including from the Guardian, The New York Times, SPIN, and Pitchfork, among others. Blanco works in LA and New York City.
The Identity Lecture Series
Mykki Blanco is the third lecturer in the VASD Program’s Identity lecture series. This series investigates the ways creative thinkers are presenting, challenging, and manipulating the subject of identity in art, design, and culture. We began the series with artist Hasan Elahi followed by a lecture by Judy Chicago. By surveying a section of creative viewpoints on this subject, this VASD lecture series explores various manifestations of today’s protean self.
VASD Program
The Visiting Artist, Scholar, and Designer Program explores critical, diverse, and creative inquiry. This interdisciplinary initiative enriches the academic experience at RMCAD and serves the greater Denver-metro community.
