“Perspective is to painting what the bridle is to the horse, the rudder to a ship.” — Leonardo Da Vinci
In the world of visual art, drawing is the basis of everything. It can be a tool for artists to illustrate abstract and fantastical ideas, or to take notes in visual ways, or to record visual impressions and create sketches as bases for projects such as paintings, sculptures and an infinity of other media.
In Module 102 of SOMA’s Drawing & Painting Program, students will learn about the basic principles of perspective through practical exercises as well as theoretical approaches. The course will teach students to draw interior spaces as well as landscapes in monochrome using pencil, charcoal and chalk. Students will also make a series of plein-air studies and sketches during one field trip where they will work from panoramic as well as urban locations.
“The Basics of Perspective & Landscape Drawing” is taught by Mariam Hamdy, who is a trained artist, art critic and correspondent. Mariam has taught at the American University in Cairo as well as the German University in Cairo.
This course is a continuation of Module 101 “The Basics of Drawing” and will build on the techniques acquired in that module. Applicants should have either completed SOMA’s Drawing for Beginners Module 101 course or have beginners’ drawing skills.
**Please note that SOMA will be closed from December 24th – January 8th for the Christmas holidays. Classes will pause after December 21st and will resume January 11th, 2015.
