Get started with universal apps and mobile development for Android, iOS, and Windows Universal Apps. Create your own mobile app in C# for Windows, iOS (iPhone, iPad), and Android while learning the basics of universal mobile app design and development.
Discover how to build custom interactive graphical user interfaces with Xamarin Forms Designer in XAML (eXtensible Application Markup Language) and backend app and cloud database applications. Use tools such as Xamarin Studio, Visual Studio 2013, and Blend for Visual Studio. Whether you’re new to mobile design and development, you will learn the fundamentals and create your first multi-platform, multi-device native mobile application by the end of the course.
Much of the course will be presented with material in C#. While the course isn’t designed as an introduction to C# we will be presenting introductory material and videos on C# at the beginning of the course which should be sufficient to navigate the course material. These materials can be found at: http://channel9.msdn.com/Series/C-Fundamentals-for-Absolute-Beginners. Students should expect to commit time outside of class meetings to review material and work on assignments.
Prerequisites: Knowledge of and/or experience in application design and development. Beginning Computer Science (CIS 100 level course). The class will require the following software: Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition (free); registered students in this course are eligible for a $99 one-year access license to Xamarin’s Business level developer tools. You will need licensure to participate in this course; Genymotion Android Platform Emulator (free for non-commercial use) http://www.genymotion.com/. The course material works equally well on PCs and Macs. If you are using a Mac for your home study of this lab oriented course and your principle goal is creating an iOS app, you will need to be able to run the latest X-Code development environment and if you wish to deploy directly to the iOS device, not just an emulator, you will need to purchase an optional Apple iOS developer license ($100 per year).
