Accrington: Kings of England present Monument To Charlie Chaplin

March 07, 2015 at Accrington Library in Accrington.

On 18th March 1941, audiences gathered for a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Great Dictator’. The cinema was bombed that night. Remarkably, all 150 in attendance survived.

Monument’ is a short black and white movie, filmed on 16mm reel, accompanied by a performance from theatre company Kings of England and live music. The movie is a monument to the WWII bombing of the National Picture Theatre in Hull, which is now a national heritage site under threat from private investors.

A great night at the cinema for families, this short film and talk is followed by a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Great Dictator’.
